"Four-year olds can be challenging to travel with, but the staff were very welcoming and entertaining and they had a lot of fun with Caroline. One of our activities in Tortuguero was a kayak trip on a portion of the river dedicated to non-motorized travel. When I started to waiver on taking Caroline on this trip, our guide assured me that we would have an amazing experience. I trusted our guide 100%, and I am so glad I didn't back out of the trip. We saw monkeys close up, turtles, and even saw macaws."

Pick Up and Drop Off Points

We pick up and drop off at hotels in any of the following areas, so you can work Tortuguero into the flow of your Costa Rica itinerary.

  • Metropolitan area San Jose hotel (your choice of land or air)
  • Arenal Volcano Region, from the Lake Aernal Dam (El Tapon) to the town of La Fortuna (land only)
  • Sarapiqui between La Virgen and Rancho Roberto (land only)
  • Puerto Viejo or Cahuita on the Caribbean Coast (land only)

From San Jose we offer transportation via either a small charter plane, or a combination of van and boat, with no cost difference between the two. From all other areas transportation is via land only, aka van and then boat.

Transfers for every destination outside of San Jose will be conducted by a recommended shuttle company. They operate as a shuttle – picking up and dropping off travelers at a series of different hotels. We pick the best operators available and work with them constantly (some would probably call it hassling) to impart high standards, but unfortunately we can’t guarantee that a Costa Rica Expeditions level of service always applies. Upon being picked up the shuttle will then visit other area hotels before embarking on the journey, and the same will be true when you arrive at your destination.

If this type of shuttle transfer is not to your liking, consult with us about setting up a private transfer in a Costa Rica Expeditions van. Add in a guide and turn your transfer into a true travel experience.

IMPORTANT: We do not pick up at private residences or at hotels that are located outside of the range specified above. If you need help arranging transportation from a private residence or from a location outside our route, let us know.

no smoking Smokers Be Aware!
Costa Rica has recently passed one of the strictest smoking regulations in the world; hotels are 100% SMOKE FREE.
If you and want to smoke, by law you are required to leave the property. This means that you have to be taken by boat across the river to the beach. Boats are available most of the time but not all the time, you may have to wait (10 minutes – 2 hours) for a boat to return to the lodge before you can be taken across.
Boats are NOT available to take you to a place where you can smoke at night. There is an $800 fine for breaking this law.
