At 10:30 am a Tortuga Lodge representative will pick you up at Caño Blanco Dock, located in Parismina where you will board a boat for the ride through the Costa Rica jungle and Tortuguero National Park to Tortuga Lodge , your charming eco-lodge on the Tortuguero Canal. The 1 hour journey winds through lush lowland jungle over glassy canals teeming with wildlife. A 25-minute flight to and / or from San Jose can be arranged at an extra cost.
You’re likely to see several types of wildlife in Costa Rica, including marine birds, caiman, and monkeys. Upon arrival, enjoy a delicious lunch before engaging in one of the signature experiences included in your stay or hike the trails behind the lodge on your own.
The Tortuguero National Park: Originally intended to protect a major nesting beach of the Atlantic Green Sea Turtle, Tortuguero now has 51,870 protected acres, one of the last large areas of tropical rainforest in Central America. Eleven habitats are found in the park. Three species of monkeys (Spider, Howler, and White-faced), Three toed Sloths, and river otters are frequently seen along the natural inland waterways and canals. Caiman, iguanas, river turtles, Basilisk Lizards, and Poison Dart Frogs (Dendrobates) inhabit the area, along with more than 320 species of birds including all six species of kingfishers found in the new world, three species of toucans, eight species of parrots, and other neotropical species such as the Slaty-tailed Trogon, White-collared Manakin and the Purple-throated Fruitcrow.
You will have the opportunity to observe many more species during your boat rides through the backwater creeks of Tortuguero National Park.
Overnight at Tortuga Lodge & Gardens.
Day 2: Tortuguero (BLD)
Leave the lodge by boat (shared with other guests) with your naturalist guide to explore the creeks of the National Park or join one of the available experiences included in your program which can take you deeper into the rainforest or to the nearby town. The morning hours are especially active in the rain forest, when wildlife is hungry and in search of their energy source for the day.
Return to the lodge in time for lunch.
In the afternoon journey back through time and glimpse the fascinating history and culture of Tortuguero Village, first known as Turtle Bogue or treat yourself to the only birds-eye view of the majestic Caribbean lowlands on this two-hour intermediate-level hike up Cerro Tortuguero. Return to the lodge by boat.
Late afternoon you are welcome to Discover the magical twilight hours of the rainforest on a two-hour walk through Tortuga Lodge’s private 26-hectare nature reserve. Join your fellow guests and the local naturalist guide at the front desk to be fitted with rubber boots and receive a rain poncho and flashlight.
